HONOLULU (AP) — The chairman of the Hawaii state Board of Education is stepping down.
The state Department of Education said in a statement Tuesday Don Horner informed the governor he plans to step down at a July 21 board meeting.
The former CEO of First Hawaiian Bank was the first to become chairman after voters in 2010 approved a ballot measure creating an appointed board. Board members were previously elected.
Then-Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed Horner in 2011.
The ballot measure was designed to bring more accountability to education.
Horner said in a statement Tuesday it's been a privilege and honor to serve as the first appointed chair. He says it's an opportune time to begin a leadership transition as the board welcomes new members and makes new committee assignments.
