AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — A black school administrator says a Long Island school district racially discriminated against him.
Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/1RhTtxD ) that 53-year-old Rodney Wilkins filed a complaint with the state Division of Human Rights.
He says he was recruited to become the associate principal at Amityville Memorial High School with the goal of addressing racial issues at the school. He says his work was undermined shortly after he started in 2014 by Superintendent Mary Kelly.
Wilkins says he was excluded from planning meetings, belittled in front of staff and relocated to a kitchen facility within the administrative building. He remains a district employee, but must work from home because he's banned from district property.
Kelly said in a statement Monday that the district will vigorously defend themselves against the claims.
