NEGAUNEE, Mich. (AP) — Blighted buildings are getting demolished in two Upper Peninsula communities with help from a state of Michigan grant worth about $223,000.
The Michigan State Housing Development Authority said Tuesday that it had awarded the grant to the Marquette County Land Bank Authority. The land bank plans to tear down a total of three commercial and eight residential structures in Ishpeming and Negaunee.
According to the land bank's grant application, downtown areas built to support mining are struggling, and many buildings have fallen into disrepair.
The grant was given through the Blight Elimination Program. Others that have received such grants include the cities of Muskegon, Kalamazoo, Ypsilanti and Manistique.
