BOSTON (AP) — A blizzard warning for the Boston area has expired, but strong winds continue to whip Massachusetts' south coast, Cape Cod and nearby islands.
The massive storm that has hit the Northeast has generated winds approaching 80 miles per hour while dumping as much as 33 inches of snow. At least 30,000 homes and businesses lost power in the Boston-Cape Cod area, including the entire island of Nantucket. Residents must now deal with plummeting temperatures.
A 40-to-50-foot section of a seawall in Marshfield, Massachusetts, was knocked out by the storm. In Rhode Island, it also snapped the mast and punctured the hull of a replica of a Revolutionary War vessel.
In New York, state officials are shifting equipment and personnel to Long Island, which was hammered with snow and high winds. New York City escaped with less than a foot of snow. The less than predicted impact there prompted apologies from forecasters who predicted epic snow totals and politicians who relied on those forecasts.
The storm is blamed for at least two deaths, both on Long Island.
