CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A Wyoming legislative committee has shot down a resolution that called for allowing state voters to decide whether to amend the state constitution to do away with the elected position of state superintendent of public instruction.
The House Education Committee on Monday voted 7-to-2 against the measure.
The Legislature two years ago stripped the superintendent's position of authority over the state education department and directed the governor to appoint a director to oversee it. The Wyoming Supreme Court reversed that move, saying any such change would require action by the voters to change the state Constitution.
Newly elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow testified to the committee before the vote that she's committed to developing a state educational governance system that works.
