MONDAMIN, Iowa (AP) — A family from Spain now living in Iowa as part of an exchange program is celebrating Thanksgiving like true Americans — trying to cook a turkey.
The Daily Nonpareil reported Thursday (http://bit.ly/1vS7SWX ) that Carmen Palmero, who is teaching at West Harrison High School in Mondamin, is celebrating the holiday with her husband and children in Iowa. Palmero is visiting from Valencia, Spain, as part of a program that brings Spanish teachers from Spain to the U.S. and Canada.
Palmero's husband and two daughters also are living in Iowa, while her son is visiting for the holiday. She said she chose Iowa because the family wanted somewhere different than what they were used to.
"We are going to cook a turkey. We are in the U.S., so we will live the way of it," Palmero said.
Palmero, among five teachers living in Iowa through the program, says it's been a good experience. West Harrison High School Principal Fred Matlage said the school's previous two Spanish teachers also were part of the program.
