LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — The University of Wyoming's Doctor of Nursing Practice Program has earned full accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The designation will strengthen delivery of both primary and mental health care in Wyoming.

Without national accreditation, UW's Doctor of Nursing Practice Program graduates would not be able to sit for the national certification exam. In addition, they would not be able to obtain licensure to practice as nurse practitioners in Wyoming or elsewhere.

The UW program offers two options. There's a family nurse practitioner program, which prepares nurse practitioners to practice as primary care providers. There's also a family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program, which prepares nurse practitioners to practice as mental health providers.

Participants are prepared to diagnose and manage illness, including prescription of medications.
