ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A man charged with shooting an Athens police officer with his own gun says he's a former U.S. Marine who suffers from post-traumatic stress.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1xKEX3z ) an attorney for 28-year-old Michael Marcantonio is asking a judge to grant him bond so he can be treated at a Department of Veterans Affairs facility. Attorney Edward Tolley says the Clarke County jail, where Marcantonio has been held since Aug. 31, doesn't allow some medications used to treat PTSD.
Officer Michael Ward was shot outside an apartment where a woman reported her ex-boyfriend was trying to get inside. Police say Marcantonio struggled with officers and grabbed Ward's gun in its holster, firing a shot into his hip and thigh. Ward survived and his since returned to duty.
