PRINEVILLE, Ore. (AP) — Health officials have confirmed two cases of whooping cough in Crook County.

Karen Yeargain is the communicable disease coordinator for the county's health department. She tells KTVZ (http://is.gd/SpoYtS ) the cases involve children under the age of 2.

Whooping cough starts out like a cold before developing into a harsh cough that can last up to 12 weeks.

Yeargain and other health officials are trying to prevent the disease from spreading.

Yeargain suggested children get the T-Dap vaccine and encouraged everyone to cover your mouth when you cough, wash your hands and stay home if you're sick.
