FORT GORDON, Ga. (AP) — A group of soldiers from the Augusta area is being sent to West Africa to help officials working to contain the spread of the Ebola virus.
Fort Gordon officials said in a release Monday that about 25 soldiers with the 35th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade will be sent to Liberia and Senegal to provide communications support to a Joint Force Command based in Monrovia, Liberia.
Maj. Jason Foreman says the soldiers will likely stay in areas with a low-risk of Ebola exposure and the soldiers will not be providing care for Ebola patients. Foreman says the soldiers will be prepared in case of an emergency.
Foreman says the soldiers will receive medical and decontamination training before deployment, which is expected later this month.
