LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — An additional $1,000 will be added to the salary schedules of Lafayette Parish public school teachers.

The Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/1nLxX6O ) the Lafayette Parish School Board unanimously voted Wednesday to use some of the money from a 2002 sales tax in teachers' regular pay. Teachers will still receive a supplemental check each year, which would be about $1,200 per teacher.

The decision came a day after a committee voted to recommend putting some of the money into teacher salaries, rather than lumping it all into an annual distribution. The additional $1,000 will be divided among teachers' regular paychecks.

The vote came despite some questions about how other employees, whose salaries are not changed by the tax, would be affected because of the way the district's salary schedules are structured. Board member Rae Trahan said she would like district staff to create indexes that clearly indicate which funds pay for which teachers.

Besides teachers, the move affects counselors, librarians and others.

Retired teacher Melinda Mangham said the 2002 tax was always designed to make Lafayette Parish teachers some of the highest paid in the state.
