LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The Lawrence Public Library is passing out trading cards featuring artwork inspired by censured books to mark Banned Books Week.
Forty-seven artists submitted works, and seven winners were selected by a panel of judges, The Lawrence Journal-World (http://bit.ly/1r6CMXr) reported. All submissions will be available in the library during national Banned Books Week, which starts Sunday and ends Saturday.
During the week, the library will release one trading card a day to the public for free. This is the third year the library has offered the cards.
"There are so many great cards," said library director Brad Allen. "It is so hard to pick seven. It's a delight to see all the artists doing this."
Gwen Kerth, whose winning card will be released Thursday, said she chose the Harper Lee classic "To Kill a Mockingbird" because it's one of her favorite books for its exploration of innocence.
"I think it's something in our society these days that we don't treasure that enough," Kerth said. She called being selected a "real honor."
The other books represented on the cards are Charles Perrault's "Little Red Riding Hood," Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea," William Golding's "Lord of the Flies," Art Spiegelman's "Maus," Louise Fitzhugh's "Harriet the Spy," and Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."
After Banned Books Week, the library will have the 2014 deck available for purchase online. The 2013 deck also remains available for purchase online.
