ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) — Oakland University in suburban Detroit is dedicating its new bell tower in the heart of campus.
An event is planned Friday afternoon at the Elliott Tower.
Hugh and Nancy Elliott earlier agreed to give $6.5 million for the tower's design, construction and operation. The Elliotts also have contributed to the university's school of business administration and established endowed scholarship and academic lecture funds.
The school says the largest bell in the tower weighs about 5,000 pounds and is 5 feet in diameter. In all, the bells weigh more than 30,000 pounds.
About 20,000 students attend Oakland University. Its campus spans more than 1,400 acres in the Oakland County cities of Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills.
