BLOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — A facility at Indiana University where cancer patients receive treatment will close by the end of the year.
The Bloomington Herald-Times reports (http://bit.ly/1AFsP6e ) the Indiana University Health Proton Therapy Center and IU Cyclotron are closing. That will leave 65 employees at the cyclotron and more than 50 at the proton therapy center out of work.
IU spokesman Mark Land says the financial condition of the center and cyclotron has been a concern for a while. They had a $3.5 million deficit for fiscal year 2013, and the university incurred a $20 million loss for construction and about a $15 million loss in receivables from the center. Land says IU and IU Health paid the bills when the center couldn't.
A five-member committee recommended closing the center.
