NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana State University's New Orleans nursing school has a three-year, $1 million grant to teach students how to deal with patients who come out of anesthesia fighting, restless or confused — or even to prevent the condition.
It's called "emergence delirium," and is associated with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Those are more common among military veterans and among people with behavioral disorders or multiple chronic ailments than in the general public.
Health Sciences Center spokeswoman Leslie Capo says students will also learn ways to avert and deal with flashbacks, which can be triggered by surgery and anesthesia.
The Health Resources and Services Administration grant will be used to train graduate nurse anesthesia students, medical students and allied health professions students.
