SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An iconic Utah hike will lack its scenic payoff this weekend as crews work to better define its steep and rocky summit.
KSL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1tLlLRL ) the U.S. Forest Service is set to close a portion of the Mount Olympus trail in order to put in new route markers.
Salt Lake District Ranger Cathy Kahlow says it will take two days.
The north face of Mount Olympus is a key element of the Salt Lake skyline.
The trail climbs about 4,000 feet in about three miles. Its final stretch requires hikers to scramble up steep rocks.
Kahlow says hiking back down is the hard part because the trail is not well defined. It confuses hikers, leading them astray and warranting search and rescue efforts each summer.
