COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Health officials in Columbus say two pools of mosquitoes on the south side of the city have tested positive for West Nile virus.
The city plans to begin spraying in those areas on Wednesday.
The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1k4M2Vs ) reports they are the first positive tests for West Nile virus in the region this summer. The Ohio Department of Health reported 24 human cases of West Nile virus last year and three deaths statewide.
Health workers in Columbus are trapping mosquitoes at 81 locations this year. They're setting and collecting about 40 traps each week.
Officials recommend using insect repellant and wearing long pants and sleeves outside, especially at dusk and dawn. They also advise repairing torn window screens and getting rid of any standing water.
