SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Avista has stepped up its program of replacing transformers containing PCBs in the cooling oil.
The work has been underway for years, but the Spokane utility is spending $36 million in hopes of having it completed by 2016 to prevent the chance of leaks and pollution.
The Spokesman-Review reports (http://bit.ly/1uQLo4w) the work is part of the goal of reducing toxic compounds in the Spokane River.
Avista has replaced more than 8,000 transformers in Eastern Washington and northern Idaho and has about 4,000 more to go.
