WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — Chickens may soon be coming home to roost in urban parts of West Valley City where they've been banned in the past.
The City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday night that defines female chickens as "household pets" — a designation that allows hens in residential neighborhoods for the first time.
Until now, chickens have been permitted only in agricultural areas of the city.
The ordinance permits each household to have a total of four pets. Roosters are still banned.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://tinyurl.com/nrgw9op) the council approved the measure on a 4-3 vote after hearing sharply divided public comment on the issue at previous meetings.
