GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Nearly 200 union employees have gone on strike at the J.R. Simplot Co. potato processing plant in Grand Forks after rejecting the company's contract offer.
The plant makes french fries and other potato products for fast food restaurants around the country.
KFGO radio reports (http://bit.ly/XA7rBf ) that there are several sticking points in contract discussions. The union says the proposal would move workers from five eight-hour days to four 12-hour days. The union also objects to an increase in health care premiums and a switch from a pension plan to a 401(k) plan.
The Boise, Idaho-based company said in a statement to The Associated Press that the proposed changes are necessary for "competitive best practices" and to create a better work environment.
