RENO APARTMENT FIRE

Man dies after being burned in Reno apartment fire

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A 58-year-old man has died after suffering third-degree burns to 90 percent of his body in a Reno apartment fire.

Police say Ronald Feemster died at California's UC Davis Burn Center on Friday evening, a day after the blaze.

Another victim, 28-year-old Luke Mumui, remains in critical care at the burn center after also suffering third-degree burns to 90 percent of his body.

Police say the condition of 36-year-old Priscilla Endemann has been upgraded and she no longer is in intensive care at a Reno hospital.

Investigators say the fire in the center unit of a large two-story apartment complex on Manhattan Street originated in the garage while the occupants were repairing a vehicle.

They say the fire was most likely caused by fuel vapors inside the garage.

TRAIN-MAN KILLED

Man struck, killed by train in Fernley

FERNLEY, Nev. (AP) — A man was struck and killed by a train while walking the tracks in Fernley, about 30 miles east of Reno.

Lyon County sheriff's Sgt. Jeremy Grundy says Union Pacific officials sounded the horn and tried to stop the train Friday afternoon, but the man did not respond and never moved.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was struck from behind by the westbound train near the Pilot Travel Center.

The 2:45 p.m. accident is under investigation.

INMATE DEATH

Inmate dies at prison in Carson City

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — An inmate at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City has died.

State Department of Corrections officials say 53-year-old Carlos Ortiz died Thursday after being taken to the prison's medical facility for treatment of a chronic medical condition.

The Carson City coroner's office responded to the facility, and an autopsy will be conducted.

Ortiz had been incarcerated at the prison since May 2008 following a conviction for first-degree murder and kidnapping in Clark County. He was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison with possible parole.

GARDNERVILLE HOMICIDE

NV woman ordered to stand trial in man's death

MINDEN, Nev. (AP) — A 30-year-old woman has been ordered to stand trial on a charge of open murder in the Dec. 2 shooting death of a man at the Gardnerville home they rented.

East Fork Justice of the Peace Tom Perkins on Friday ruled there was sufficient evidence to try Nicole Followill in the death of 33-year-old Jason Thrift.

Followill told detectives she shot Thrift once in the forehead with a 9 mm Glock handgun as he came at her, but she argued it was justifiable homicide because he was going to kill her.

But a coroner's inquest in January determined that Thrift died by criminal means.

Followill was in the process of kicking Thrift out of the house when the shooting occurred.

Gardnerville's Record-Courier reports Followill will be arraigned April 14 in Douglas County District Court.

LAKE TAHOE-FIREWORKS LAWSUIT

LTVA: No deal by Friday, no Tahoe fireworks July 4

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Joseph and Joan Truxler knew they were headed for rough waters when they decided last fall that the only way to stop tourism officials from polluting Lake Tahoe with Fourth of July fireworks debris was to sue them under the Clean Water Act.

The Zephyr Cove couple says the lawsuit was a last resort because the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority wouldn't respond to concerns about the 8,000 pieces of spent fireworks they've gathered along the southeast shore.

The authority decided last week that if a settlement agreement cannot be reached by April 4, they'll cancel the event.

Joan Truxler says they never intended to stop the fireworks, only regulate them better and do a better job of cleaning up. She says she's hopeful a settlement conference in Sacramento on Monday will resolve the dispute.

GAS EXPLORATION-NEVADA

Public comment sought on proposed NV gas drilling

ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Federal land managers are seeking public comment on a Houston-based oil company's proposed gas exploration drilling in northeast Nevada with the use of hydraulic fracturing, better known as fracking.

Noble Energy Inc. proposes to drill up to 20 wells on 39,445 acres of public and private lands located around Tabor Flats in Elko County, about four miles northwest of Wells.

Construction associated with the project includes drill pads and new roads as well as maintenance or upgrades to existing roads to allow for drill rig and support vehicle traffic.

A total of 20,662 acres, or 52 percent, of the project area would be on public land.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is accepting public comment on its environmental assessment for the Mary's River Oil and Gas Exploration Project until April 23.

ULNV-RICE EXTENSION

UNLV will recommend extension for Dave Rice

LAS VEGAS (AP) — UNLV President Donald Snyder and athletic director Tina Kunzer-Murphy said Saturday that they will recommend a contract extension for basketball coach Dave Rice.

Snyder and Kunzer-Murphy will ask the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents to extend Rice's contract two years through the 2018-19. That recommendation will include an incentive package that will provide additional compensation opportunities based on academic and athletic success.

The proposal will be presented at the next Board of Regents meeting.

Rice is 71-32 in three seasons at the school.
