PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia has announced plans to relocate its police headquarters to the former home of The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News.
The announcement Wednesday represents a change of plans for the city. It had already spent $50 million rehabbing a 90-year-old former insurance company building in West Philadelphia to accommodate the police department.
The city says in a statement that the former newspaper building is much larger.
It will need about $288 million in renovations, but Mayor Jim Kenney says taxpayers will get more for their money. He says the former news building will keep police headquartered downtown while providing space for other agencies.
Police brass have been at a distinctive modernist building — nicknamed the Roundhouse — since 1963.
City officials say they will pursue development opportunities for the former insurance company site.
