A Houston-area man accused of forcing a Nigerian woman to care for his five children and home without pay for two years and seizing the nanny's passport has been granted a bond by a federal magistrate judge.
Chudy Nsobundu (SUB'-uhn-doh) of Katy appeared in federal court Tuesday in Houston after he and his wife, Sandra Nsobundu, were arrested a day earlier on charges of forced labor, withholding documents, conspiracy to harbor an illegal immigrant and visa fraud.
Chudy Nsobundu was granted a $5,000 bond. His wife was given an unsecured bond earlier Tuesday.
Chudy Nsobundu was asked by the judge to hire an attorney after he didn't qualify for a court-appointed lawyer.
A criminal complaint says the 38-year-old nanny was rescued last October following a tip to an anti-human trafficking group.

A Houston-area woman accused of forcing a Nigerian woman to care for her five children and home without pay for two years and physically abusing the nanny has been granted a bond by a federal magistrate judge.
Sandra Nsobundu (SUB'-uhn-doh) of Katy appeared in Houston federal court Tuesday after she and her husband, Chudy Nsobundu, were arrested a day earlier on charges of forced labor, withholding documents, conspiracy to harbor an illegal immigrant and visa fraud.
Sandra Nsobundu was set to be released later Tuesday on an unsecured bond. Her husband is set to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.
Her attorney, Joan Nwuli, declined to comment.

Chudy and Sandra Nsobundu (SUB'-uhn-doh) of Katy were arrested Monday on charges of forced labor, withholding documents, conspiracy to harbor an illegal immigrant and visa fraud.
According to a criminal complaint, the 38-year-old nanny says she was promised $100 per month but has never been paid in her two years in the U.S. She told investigators that the couple physically and verbally abused her.
She was rescued last October following a tip to an anti-human trafficking group.
The Nsobundus face an initial appearance Tuesday in federal court in Houston. Online court records don't list attorneys to speak on behalf of them.
