NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois State University professor has been awarded a federal grant of nearly $5 million to help young people in Champaign county with relationship-building, getting ready for jobs and handling their finances.
The Department of Health and Human Services grant amounts to about $1 million annually to establish the Champaign Area Relationship Education for Youth program.
The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports (http://bit.ly/1R7enuW ) the program is for people aged 15 to 24 and include subsidized summer work or reimbursement for college tuition.
Professor Ani Yazedjian (AH'-nee yuh-ZEDJ'-ee-un) will direct the program. She is chairwoman of ISU's Department of Family and Consumer Services.
Yazedjian says the goal is to "support the successful transition into adulthood" and give impoverished young people a better chance.
