ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Federal safety officials are investigating the cause of a fire at a gold mine in northeast Nevada.
Elko County Fire District division chief Linda Bingaman said no one was injured in the fire that broke out shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jerritt Canyon Mine about 50 miles north of Elko.
But the blaze caused mine officials to shut down a high-temperature oven called a "roaster" that uses heat and air to process ore at temperatures up to 1,200 degrees.
Bingaman told the Elko Daily Free Press (http://tinyurl.com/q4smssp) the fire damaged some piping above the 11-story high roaster. She said several volunteer fire departments helped respond because firefighters initially were concerned that some hazardous materials might burn
Officials for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration are leading the investigation.
