OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Researchers at the University of Oklahoma's College of Nursing are using a $300,000 federal grant to focus on improving health and eliminating urban health disparities in the state.
The proposed study couples community outreach with an enhanced web-based health risk assessment that will be used by participants to manage their health. It's designed to give participants additional tools for improving health, including individualized health coaching, goal-setting skills and immediate feedback on their health status.
Researchers hope to determine what impact those tools have on making lifestyle changes and overall health status.
Health coaches will be recruited from the community and trained in both motivational interviewing and goal-directed health planning. Community churches will provide an outreach component for the study and health festivals are planned during the next 12 months.
