LAWTON, Okla. (AP) — The Lawton school district is selling two empty buildings to help offset an expected budget shortfall.
The Lawton Constitution (http://bit.ly/1chJSov ) reports its board of education voted Monday to sell the Professional Development Center and the Jackson Elementary School.
The district anticipates losing about $5.6 million in state funds due to a change in its enrollment number used in a state funding formula and a drop in state projected revenues.
The district also has already hired about 100 teachers, which will result in an increase of about $1.6 million in salary steps and cost increases next year.
Superintendent Tom Deighan says the buildings have been appraised and that the district will begin considering sealed bids for them as soon as they're received.
