CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A budget deal lawmakers have approved means about a $15 million cut for the University of Illinois.
University spokesman Tom Hardy tells The (Champaign) News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1M6BGa9 ) the university is owed about $297 million from the state and expects a reduction by roughly $15 million.
He says it's a large cut, but students shouldn't be affected. He adds no furloughs or layoffs are expected for faculty and staff.
The Illinois Senate approved a plan Thursday that's designed to fill a $1.6 billion budget hole. The House approved it earlier this week.
The budget deal follows weeks of negotiation between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic legislative leaders.
The plan lets Rauner transfer $1.3 billion from funds set aside for other purposes. The rest comes from a 2.25 percent across-the-board budget cut.
