EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan State University Board of Trustees has approved construction of an $85.1 million biomedical research center in Grand Rapids.

The building approved Friday will be on the site of the former home of The Grand Rapids Press newspaper in downtown.

The resolution for the project includes $85.1 million for a new building. The combined budget for the project, along with demolition of the newspaper building, is $88.1 million.

Plans call for a roughly 160,000-square-foot, multi-story research building. The building will occupy about half of the property, leaving the door open for future developments. Demolition of the former newspaper building is scheduled to begin in March.

The MSU Grand Rapids Biomedical Research Center is planned to open late 2017.
