RENO, Nev. (AP) — A coyote hunting contest in Nevada yesterday drew protests from animal welfare advocates. Activists branded the contest as unethical and say they'll push for legislation to ban similar events in Nevada in the future. Organizers defended the contest, saying the state is teaming with coyotes and the animals prey on livestock and pets.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Guitarist Bruce Rickerd holds the distinction of performing in every performance of "Mystere" at Treasure Island since the original Cirque du Soleil show based on the Strip arrived 21 years ago. That perfect attendance reached 10,000 performances yesterday. Cirque du Soleil officials say Rickerd's name will be added to the Guinness Book of World Records.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A report shows Nevada ranks near the bottom for volunteer service in the nation. The report from the Corporation for National and Community Service ranks Nevada's volunteer rate 49th among the 50 states and Washington, D.C. It shows that 20.3 percent of Nevada residents volunteered in 2013 compared with the national average of 25.4 percent. Nevada only ranks ahead of New York and Louisiana.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Despite a slow start to the state's snowy season this year, Thursday's winter storm has put Utah ski resorts back on course and allowed them to open additional lifts. Several Utah ski resorts say the 10 inches or more of snow will make a big difference. Brighton Ski Resort spokesman Jared Winkler says 17 inches of new snow allowed the resort to run open all of its ski lifts Friday.
