CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — An appeals court says the Iowa Board of Regents should have negotiated faculty buyouts with a union representing professors at the University of Northern Iowa.
The Iowa Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday that an early separation plan offered by the board in 2012 should have been subject to union negotiation.
Union leaders have complained that several longtime professors felt forced to give up their jobs and quit UNI, at a time when the regents closed Malcolm Price Laboratory School and cancelled several academic programs.
Regents leaders argued the buyouts were not subject to collective bargaining, and that the cuts were needed to save money.
Wednesday's ruling upholds earlier decisions by the Public Employment Relations Board and a district court judge in the union's favor.
