SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A bill that would have allowed advertising on the sides of school buses has failed in a legislative committee.

Members of the House Education Committee on Friday expressed concerns that people who saw the ads would assume the products were endorsed by schools.

Some members also feared that students would be subjected to inappropriate messages.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Jim Bird would have prohibited ads about alcohol, tobacco, drugs, gambling or sexual material. It also would have required that advertising be "age appropriate."

The bill was endorsed by the Utah School Boards Association.

But committee members say they were not swayed by the prospect of school boards being able to raise up to $500,000 a year through bus ads.
