Police issue warning after robbery of elderly woman

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City police investigators are looking for whoever robbed an elderly woman on the east side of town.

It happened Thursday around 10:15 a.m. at 2550 South Chadwick (near 1500 East).

Det. Dennis McGowan says the 76-year-old victim was walking home from the bank when she felt somebody tugging at her backpack from behind.

"She was trying to hold on to these two items and in the struggle she fell backward, fell over and then saw this woman who was trying to get these items away from her," McGowan said.

Officers say the robber, who wasn't armed, did get away with both bags. A man in a gray sedan was waiting nearby and served as the getaway driver.

"It's quite possible they saw this elderly, potentially vulnerable victim exit the bank and then just followed her," McGowan said.

Police now are warning everybody to keep an eye open to the surrounding environment, no matter what neighborhood.

"It's not a tougher part of town--again, it's on the east side," McGowan said. "It just shows that you do need to be constantly alert to your surroundings wherever you are, and keep looking over your shoulder whenever you're alone."

Police did not have a detailed description of the attacker and the getaway driver.
