SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake police are investigating an overnight shooting that left a woman fighting for her life.

Officers responded to the call of shots fired in a Salt Lake neighborhood near 1400 W. and 1300 South at 3 a.m. Sunday. Two people had been shot.

"Apparently it was stemming from an earlier altercation. We arrived on scene and found a female in her twenties inside one of the houses with a gunshot wound to her head," said Sgt Robin Snyder of the Salt Lake City Police Department. "We also found a male in his twenties outside of an address nearby with a gunshot wound to his torso."

It was not until late Sunday afternoon that police finished investigating at the scene, gathering evidence for what they fear will become a homicide investigation.

Sgt. Snyder said, "The female at this point is in very critical condition at a nearby hospital and we're not sure if show is going to survive the shooting or not. The male left the scene in critical condition, but has been upgraded and is now stable."

From the start, police could not find out what had happened from witnesses. They took 30 people into custody for questioning overnight, but couldn't get any helpful information.

All of them have been released, and it is unknown if any of them are possible suspects in the shooting.

"We don't have any suspect information, unfortunately. We have interviewed a lot of people in this case with a lack of cooperation and so we are unable to determine who the suspects are at this point," said Snyder.

Police do know there had been a party going on in the neighborhood with alcohol, which continued into the early morning hours.

Officers are also looking at the possibility the shootings could be gang related and have had gang detectives involved in the investigation.
