(KSL News) A big building in downtown Salt Lake is on the move: straight up! It's the historic Oddfellows Hall.
Since early this year, crews have been preparing it for a move across Market Street to make way for a new federal court building. It's one of the biggest brick and stone buildings ever moved.
Today, hydraulic jacks began inching the building upward on steel beams, so slowly it's like watching grass grow.
Here's some advice to those looking for excitement. Alan Rindlisbacher, with Layton Construction, said, "Stay home. Stay home. Yeah, there's nothing much exciting. For us in the construction industry, this is an exciting move because we are finally seeing some action after months and months of preparation, but it is literally inches at a time."
The building rose nearly 12 inches off its foundation yesterday and today. An earlier attempt to lift the building was cut short when cracks appeared and the building had to be shored up.
