It's a dead end for police in South Jordan after a bold armed robbery with all the earmarks of advanced planning. It happened at the Goldenwest credit union near 10400 South and Bangerter Highway.
The suspect has some serious moxie, and that's what worries police. He didn't just hand a teller a note, rather he wore gloves, got access to the vault and even did away with the dye packs.
"They actually served two customers prior to this gentleman coming into the building. Our feeling is he was waiting until those patrons left," said South Jordan police Lt. Rob Hansen.
Witnesses describe this brazen bank robber as 5 feet 7 inches tall, 160 pounds with dark skin and curly hair. He was also dressed in all black.
When he entered the building, the suspect pulled a hood over his face and walked up to the two employees inside. The masked man then put a gun to one employee's head and forced him to the vault, where he helped himself to the money.
"He identified the dye pack, so it was removed prior to him exiting," Hansen said.The robber left in one of the employee's cars, which police found abandoned about four blocks away. There was no sign of him there, and K-9 units were unable to track his scent. That leads police to believe he jumped in another getaway car.
The robber did spend some time in the credit union, and that could help with the investigation. "I believe the time delay between the actual alarm notification and the time he entered the building is about eight to 10 minutes," Hansen said.
That's enough time for security cameras to get good pictures of him. "We'll do our best to get him," Hansen said.
