The city of Herriman and a major developer unveiled plans today for the new Herriman Towne Center. It's going to be big, and it's going to be expensive. Construction is expected to start in just weeks.

There are big plans for 375 acres of undeveloped land at Main Street near 12600 South in Herriman. The city's mayor, J. Lynn Crane, said, "This is a great opportunity for the city of Herriman."

A city of less than 1,000 residents just 10 years ago, Herriman has grown to almost 20,000 residents, according to Crane. Development is catching up, with today's announcement of a new town center.

Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon said, "Herriman will include residential, office, everything you need in a community. It reminds me a lot of a European-style community."

The mayors of Salt Lake County and Herriman, along with leaders of The Sorenson Group, announced the master plan today. Mayor Crane said, "This will become a wonderful core community."

It took a long court battle to get this going. The seven square miles of land where the new Towne Center will be built used to be considered part of Bluffdale. Bluffdale requires a minimum lot size of one acre for each single-family dwelling. The landowners sued to break away from the city in order to join Herriman.

Last year, the Utah Supreme Court ruled in favor of the landowners, and plans began on the city center. This summer, developers aren't wasting anytime getting things going.

Jim Sorenson, of The Sorenson Group, said, "Within the next 90 days we'll start construction on the recreation center and county library, and the school will be under construction shortly."

By 2009, about 2,000 housing units will be ready to welcome new residents. And in the next two to three years, expect to see a new City Hall up and running.

The European feel that Mayor Peter Corroon mentioned means people living in the center will have everything they need within a short distance. "People won't need a car if they work in the Herriman Towne Center," Corroon said.

This is considered the most ambitious development in the history of Herriman and the most expensive, with a price tag of $1 billion.

Sorenson said, "This is a big development."

The project is planned for completion in six to 10 years.
