After the producer yells "We're rolling! Go ahead Nick," Nick Lachey leads four finalists down a hallway to Murray High's cafeteria for their next challenge.

"All these kids are incredibly talented, and the stakes are pretty high," Lachey said.

Lachey is known for his singing with the group 98 Degrees, and for his former marriage to Jessica Simpson. Now he has a new role in "High School Musical: Get in the Picture."

It's officially as host, but I wanted to be a mentor to these kids," Lachey said.

Twelve finalists were picked from across the country to participate in the competition. The winner will be featured in the upcoming "High School Musical" movie, in theaters this fall, and get a recording contract.

Lachey says Utah's been great. "People have been really friendly and warm," he said.

Filming wraps up this week, and the show begins July 20.
