SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- There are "angels" afoot in Salt Lake City's Pioneer Park.

A chapter of the unarmed, all-volunteer patrol group the Guardian Angels is up and running in the city. The group performed its first patrols in the park Saturday.

The chapter was started by Joshua Tso and has 14 members. All Angels are trained in CPR, first aid, martial arts skills, law, conflict resolution and communication techniques.

Based in New York City, the Angels were formed in 1979 by a McDonald's restaurant manager fed up with crime on the city's subway system.

Tso contacted the group in 2007 about starting a Salt Lake chapter.

Pioneer Park neighbor Michelle Weber says the presence of the Angels is a positive step for the park.
