(KSL News) Utah Transit Authority train and bus riders may soon be forced to help pay for soaring diesel fuel prices.

Diesel is up more than 25 percent since the first of the year. UTA says it will face a $5 million shortfall if it doesn't do something.

So it's proposing a 25-cent surcharge for riders who pay the standard $1.75 fare, but it could go even higher if diesel keeps going up.

The surcharge could take effect in July.
