TOOELE — A woman was taken to the hospital after her leg was impaled by the handlebar of a dirt bike Thursday morning.
A 22-year-old from Iowa was riding a Honda 250 in a backyard near Lake Point Road when she was going over a jump and lost control, according to Deputy Aaron Bird of the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office. She went over the handlebar and was impaled in the rear hamstring area after tipping to the side, he said.
“We had to remove the handlebar from the motorcycle and she was transported with the handlebar still inside of her leg to Salt Lake for medical attention,” he said.

She was unable to travel by medical helicopter because the handlebar was still in her leg, police said. The woman was alert and conscious when medical personnel arrived on the scene, according to Bird.
Investigators said the woman did not appear to be an experienced rider. She was not wearing a helmet or other appropriate safety gear at the time of the accident and was in shorts and tennis shoes, Bird said.
Her family has been notified of the accident, according to police.
