FARMINGTON — A fire running along the fence of Lagoon was put out Sunday, according to the Farmington Fire Department.
A report of a grass fire running along the fence between the Lagoon picnic pavilions and Lagoon Trail creek came in just before 5 p.m., Farmington Fire Captain Jay Barnum said. Firefighters found multiple spots of fire that stretched for about 200 yards when they arrived, he said.
Investigators said they aren't sure which side of the fence the fire started on, but that it appears to have been caused by a person. The fire ran through cotton plants on the ground, which Barnum said is especially thick this year with it being 4-5 inches thick in some areas.
Cotton is one of those things that will light on fire and burn really fast.

“Cotton is one of those things that will light on fire and burn really fast," he said. "It will just run and you can’t necessarily see the fire running, so you may think nothing is on fire and then next thing you know, 20 feet from where you’re at a little fire will pop up.”
No structures were damaged and Lagoon patrons were not in any danger, Barnum said. It took about two hours to put the fire out.
