Tom Callan and AP reporting Utah's police disciplinary review council says it is taking a tougher stance on officer misconduct.
Members of the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Council say they want to send a message that bad behavior is intolerable.
The council looked at a record 35 cases on Monday. Most involved sexual misconduct. "We haven't ever heard 35 cases at one time," said Sgt. Jeff Nigbur, spokesman for the Utah Department of Public Safety.
Nigbur says it's a misconception that officers turn a blind eye when one of their own crosses the line. "Most cases range from sexual misconduct to alcohol use," he said.
Some cases included high-ranking officers. A former Helper police chief relinquished his badge as part of a review into sexual misconduct with a secretary.
The council also issued a four-year suspension to the former head of the Utah Highway Patrol's anti-DUI squad, who was charged in a drunken driving crash in 2006.
