SALT LAKE CITY — An intruder had to ask for help from the occupants of the home he was trying to burglarize after he severely cut himself on the window he broke to get inside, police say.

Just after 6 a.m. Thursday, a 20-year-old man broke a window at a home in the 500 South block of 1000 West, said Salt Lake police detective Dennis McGowan. As the man crawled through the window, a shard of glass caused a "large and deep" cut to one of his arms.

The three adults inside the home, including Pablo Solorio, woke up to the sound of the shattering glass.

"It was nerve-racking," Solorio said. "I didn't know what was going on."

If that wasn't bad enough, the next thing he heard was screaming.

"The guy just walked through here, walked through then entire living room and the hallway, screaming for help," Solorio said.

One of the intruder's arms was bleeding heavily. Solorio's step-dad helped him to the bathroom, while Solorio's girlfriend called 911.

"These people, they took pity on this person. They saw he was severely injured and they rendered aid," McGowan said.

The intruder was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. McGowan said it was possible that an artery was cut.

"The funny thing is, I met the kid the weekend before," Solorio said. "He knew my name. He was like, 'Pablo, help me! Help me! Help me!'"

Even though the guy had one of Solorio's video game consoles in his hand, Solorio said the man claimed he was only trying to get away from other people chasing him, so he jumped through the window to get away.

"He broke into our house and made us go through a lot of anxiety," Solorio said. "I don't really know how to feel about the whole situation."

The man, whose name was not released pending his arrest, remained in the hospital Friday. He was expected to be arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail after being released.
