LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) - A fatal shooting in Longmont that police believe was a prank gone wrong has been ruled a homicide. The suspected shooter is a man from Orem, Utah.
Boulder County Coroner Emma Hall released her findings Friday in the Sept. 6 death of 18-year-old Premila Lal of Longmont.
The Times-Call reports Lal and her 12-year-old cousin sneaked into a family home to scare Nerrek Galley and Lal's 15-year-old brother, who were securing the home after the Lal family moved to Niwot.
Lal's father says Galley, of Orem, Utah, shot his daughter in the chest when she jumped out of a closet she was hiding in and startled him.
Galley has been charged with child abuse, reckless endangerment and permitting a juvenile to have a firearm. Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur says the man allowed Lal's brother to have a handgun without the permission of the boy's parents.
