SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah officials have received more than 3,500 complaints about proposed drilling in the Great Salt Lake near the famous Spiral Jetty.
The Jetty is a 1,500-foot-long sculpture of basalt rock that extends out into the north arm of the lake. Built in 1970, it has become a recognized landmark and popular with art lovers around the world.
Two applications submitted to the state Department of Natural Resources would begin projects within five miles of the Jetty. Though they wouldn't be the first -- almost 40 wells have been drilled that close or closer -- most existing wells were installed before the Jetty was created.
The state is expected to make a decision within the next 45 days.
