MINERSVILLE, Beaver County — Bureau of Land Management officials said Wednesday evening that progress was being made on the Black Mountain Fire.

Starting Thursday, a Type III incident management team will take over operations.

Cedar City residents may feel the effects of the smoke soon as the fire burns more vegetation, officials said.

The lightning-caused fire started about 5 p.m. Tuesday about 3 miles southeast of Minersville. As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, the fire had burned an estimated 3,000 or more acres and was just 5 percent contained.

There were no evacuation orders Wednesday, but the Maple Springs, Black Mountain, Chalk Hollow and Camel Hollow roads were all closed. The majority of the fire was in steep, rocky terrain.

One cabin was being threatened, according to fire officials.

About 200 personnel, three helicopters and four air tankers were assigned to help fight the fire.

Officials reminded the public to stay clear of the areas around the fire, because the fire is spreading so quickly.
