CLINTON — A cow loose in Davis County on Thursday had homeowners scratching their heads as the animal led authorities on a chase that ended in a Roy woman's backyard.

It took officers from Clinton, Roy and Davis County animal control about an hour to capture the cow, which was reported to be running loose through a Roy neighborhood on Wednesday morning.

Clinton police chief Bill Chilson got the call Wednesday about a cow on the loose in a Clinton neighborhood, so he went to the address he was given. There was no cow, though, so he called dispatch.

"Sometimes, things happen that's very funny in law enforcement, and this happened to be one of them," Chilson said. "We just got a report that it's over at 5700 South 2700 West in Roy, which is a couple miles away, and I'm thinking, ‘Cow has got track shoes on!' "

The cow was running down roads and through yards and fields. A Davis County animal control officer had it cornered until the cow ran into the officer's truck — causing it to need repairs — and kept going.

"She was moving pretty fast," said Ryan Blackburn with Davis County Animal Control. "She was definitely spooked."

The cow eventually made its way to Sharon Anderson's yard. The Roy resident said she was confused about where it had come from, because there are no farms near her house.

"It was crazy," she said. We just all come running out here and the first thing I thought was, ‘Holy cow, that's a cow!' "

She had no idea officers had been chasing the cow for about a half hour already.

"No, it did not want to get caught whatsoever," Chilson said. "The (fence) he jumped over was like a 6-foot fence. Just went up ... there (went) the cow."

Anderson got her cellphone to get video of the cow running around her trampoline, dodging officers. Eventually, the cow slipped and fell, and officers pinned it down until they could control it — giving everyone a story they won't forget.

"You don't expect to see a cow in your yard up here, that's for sure," Anderson said.

There were no injuries reported, including to the cow. There was some property damage. The cow's owner did not return requests from KSL News for comment, but was fined $50.
