WEST VALLEY CITY — UDOT is finally gaining the rights to a piece of land to complete the Mountain View Corridor project after over three decades of bargaining for it. The three-way land deal involved two other state agencies.

UDOT wanted the property near the Lee Kay Shooting Range to have access to connect the Mountain View Corridor highway to I-80 at 5400 South. However, the Utah School Trust Lands (SITLA) and the Division of Wildlife Resources also wanted access to the land.

The DWR wanted a piece of the land for the prime fishing and hunting that it offered. However, SITLA owned the property but couldn't use it. SITLA traded the wildlife land to the DWR in exchange for the land that UDOT wanted for the highway. Then SITLA sold that portion of the land to UDOT for $6.5 million.

All three agencies said that they were pleased to get what they wanted from the three-way deal.

"It really has come out to be a win-win-win outcome for all of us," said Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration representative, Kim Christy.

The DWR said that because of the deal, more fishing and hunting will be open to the public. They also plan to keep the shooting range open.

The money SITLA obtained from the deal will be used in the Utah education fund.

"All of the revenues we generate in our transactions in this administration principally go to what's known as the permanent school fund," Christy said.

The UDOT spokesperson said that it would be years before any construction is underway on the new stretch of the Mountain View Corridor.
