WEST VALLEY CITY — A mother and son spent Thursday morning in the Salt Lake County Jail after allegedly leading police on a chase through West Valley City.

At about 3 a.m. a police officer spotted a car matching the description of a stolen vehicle. When police tried to make a traffic stop, the driver sped off, starting a short chase.

"During the pursuit we followed the suspect into a cul-de-sac," said Lt. Matt Elson with the West Valley City Police Department. "The suspect turned around to exit the cul-de-sac. He did ram one of our police vehicles."

Elson said the police car had only minor damage to the front and no one was hurt, but the two people inside the car got out and started to run. The driver was an 18-year-old man and the passenger was his mother.

A police dog caught up to the driver and bit him before he surrendered. Officers tracked down the woman a short time later and discovered there were warrants out for her arrest.

The son could face charges of aggravated assault on an officer for ramming the police car.
